Days 1\u20133 of any outlook are generally quite reliable for temperature trends and whether precipitation is likely. Days 4\u20135 are useful for spotting broad patterns \u2014 a warm-up, a cooldown, an approaching storm system \u2014 but exact timing and totals can still shift. Days 6\u20137 should be read as a rough trend line at best; specific numbers that far out are routinely revised as new data comes in.<\/p>\n
Weather models are re-run several times a day as new atmospheric data arrives from satellites, weather balloons, and ground stations. A storm track that looked like it would pass well offshore on Monday can shift closer to the coast by Wednesday. This isn’t the forecast being “wrong” \u2014 it’s the normal process of a forecast sharpening as the event gets closer.<\/p>\n
Treat the outlook as a planning tool, not a promise. If a storm is flagged for the coming weekend, that’s a good enough reason to keep an eye on updates through the week rather than to cancel plans immediately. Outlooks issued during transitional months \u2014 March, April, October, and November \u2014 tend to be less certain, because the jet stream is more active and cold and warm air masses are fighting for control of the region.
